Over the past 30 years Robert has launched and acquired as well as managed and sold his own businesses.
Most of his career has been spent in the timber trade, and he was first appointed as a Director to a sheet material merchant at the age of 21. He later moved to a large timber and sheet material merchant in Stoke on Trent, experiencing his first ‘bimbo’ (buy in, management buy out).
His next venture, with a colleague, was a start-up also within the sheet material sector. The business grew to £23m in annual sales and employing over 100 people after just 9 years, building both manufacturing and distribution sites in Stoke on Trent. They also bought a company in Scotland as part of a strategic expansion plan.
In 2007, they were approached by a Venture Capital firm and agreed to sell. However, he remained with the business until 2011, further building the business both organically and through acquisitions.
After leaving, he joined forces with an associate to acquire the assets of a sheet material manufacturing business in Leeds. The business was completely re-modelled and monthly sales increased 20x fold and within just 3 years the business was returning a healthy net profit, before selling the shares.
Robert’s career has provided himself with a wide experience of business sales and acquisitions. He understands what makes a business valuable to a buyer and how to prepare a business for sale.
