Halifax is a market town and is the largest town in the Calderdale area. It is historically known for being the woollen manufacturing hub in what was the West Riding of Yorkshire. The Victorian architecture and old mill buildings are still much evident in the town today. Not surprisingly the Halifax bank was established here and still has big offices in the centre. The Piece Hall is a key landmark in the town dating back to 1779 and is now home to independent shops and also host to musical events after a major restoration project saw it reopen in 2017.
