Huddersfield is a big market town in Kirklees. As a former major mill town in the Industrial Revolution the buildings from back then are still very present in the town’s architecture. Huddersfield grew a reputation for manufacturing with companies like Brook Motors (later Invensys Brook Compton) once having 10 factories in the town and producing 70% of the world’s electric motors. It remains a manufacturing base first and foremost and is home to many recognisable names. Huddersfield University is the largest employer in the town. The John Smiths Stadium is still a rarity in that both Huddersfield Giants rugby league team and Huddersfield Town football club call it home, recognising that Rugby as a game was invented in Huddersfield in 1895.
