The Business
Alexander Taylor Bakery is widely regarded as Scotland‘s oldest bakery, trading from the heart of Strathaven in South Lanarkshire since 1820. A sixth-generation family business built on over two centuries of craft baking, the operation spans a production bakery, retail shop and cafรฉ-deli, employing a team of 26 and serving a loyal community customer base that extends well beyond the town itself.
By any measure, it is a remarkable business; steeped in heritage, genuinely profitable, and with a story that few buyers encounter more than once in a lifetime.
The Challenge
Barry and Claire Taylor had been with another broker for almost two years. Despite the obvious appeal of the business, that relationship had produced next to no meaningful traction – no credible offers, no serious buyer progression, and growing frustration on the part of the sellers.
The clock was also ticking. With the government’s planned increase to Business Asset Disposal Relief (BADR) rising from 14% to 18% on 6 April 2026, the financial cost of delay was becoming very real. For Barry and Claire, completing before that deadline wasn’t just preferable. It was material.
They came to Business Partnership looking for a different approach.
What We Did
From the outset, we focused on two things: positioning the business correctly and finding the right buyer, not just any buyer.
Alexander Taylor wasn’t a difficult business to sell; it was a difficult business to sell well. Its heritage, community standing and the emotional weight of the Taylor family’s involvement all meant that the wrong buyer, or the wrong process, could have undermined the outcome significantly. We were clear with Barry and Claire that our job was to find someone who understood what they were acquiring, and who would be trusted by staff, customers and the wider community to carry it forward.
We ran a structured, targeted process. The business attracted serious interest from buyers across the UK and beyond, and it quickly became apparent that the strongest candidate was Carlos Huerta, a California-based entrepreneur with a genuine passion for Scotland and a long-term commitment to preserving the bakery’s identity and presence in Strathaven.
With the BADR deadline firmly in view, we maintained consistent pressure on timeline throughout; keeping all parties aligned, managing the legal process proactively, and ensuring that nothing drifted.
The Outcome
Barry and Claire secured a successful exit on terms that reflected the true value of what they had built, with the benefit of the lower BADR rate achieved ahead of the deadline.
Carlos now takes ownership of a business he is genuinely invested in, both commercially and personally, and the bakery continues to trade as normal from its iconic Strathaven premises.
From first instruction to completion: a matter of months.
In Their Words
Barry and Claire Taylor, who operated the business for nearly 30 years as the sixth generation of the family, said:
Handing over something that has been in our family for so long was never going to be an easy decision. But knowing that Alexander Taylor is passing to someone who genuinely cares about what it stands for, and who is committed to its future in this community, makes it the right one.

Carlos Huerta, the California-based entrepreneur who acquired the business, commented:
Alexander Taylor is more than a bakery; it is a piece of living Scottish heritage. From the moment I came across this business, I felt a real connection to what it represents: genuine craft, community, and a story that has been carefully preserved across generations. My commitment is to protect that legacy and build on it, keeping the heart of the business exactly where it belongs, in Strathaven. But the goal is no longer just to be one of the oldest – it’s to become one of the most well-known bakeries in the UK.

Cameron Young, the Business Partnership Partner who handled the sale, added:
This is a genuinely special business with a story that resonated with buyers from across the world. Carlos stood out not just because of his commercial credentials, but because of his passion for Scotland and his respect for what the Taylors have created here. It was clear from early conversations that he wasn’t looking to reinvent Alexander Taylor – he was looking to steward it. That’s exactly what this business deserves.
Thinking About Selling Your Business?
The Alexander Taylor story is a reminder that the right process makes all the difference. A remarkable business sat with another agent for two years without result; not because it was a difficult sell, but because it wasn’t being handled in the right way.
At Business Partnership, we take the time to understand what you’ve built, what matters to you beyond the headline price, and what a successful outcome actually looks like for you and your family. Whether that’s finding a buyer who will protect your legacy, completing ahead of a tax deadline, or simply getting a deal done after years of frustration elsewhere – we’re here to make it happen.
If you’re thinking about selling your business, or if you’ve been on the market with another agent and feel like you’re going nowhere, we’d welcome the conversation.
