Successfully selling a specialist van lining business…Twice

Background

Ply Lining Services Ltd who focus on the design, fabrication, and installation of plywood linings for commercial vehicles, has been successfully sold twice through Business Partnership. The company built a strong reputation for producing high quality van linings and accessories, including precision cut racking systems and protective panel kits tailored to virtually every make and model of van available.

Operating from a modern 2,700 sq ft factory, the business utilised state-of-the-art CNC saws, milling equipment, and panel optimisation software to maximise efficiency and reduce material waste. With a loyal customer base including commercial vehicle dealerships, leasing firms, and independent businesses, the company provided both supply-only kits and on-site installation services. At its peak, a team of four mobile fitters serviced customers across the UK, ensuring a flexible and responsive offering.

First Sale (2010)

Business Partnership was first engaged in 2009 to support the sale of the business, culminating in a successful transition in early 2010. The buyer at the time was a South African family looking to relocate to the UK, bringing with them significant business experience and a desire to invest in a well established, profitable enterprise. The business continued to thrive under their ownership, benefiting from their expertise and commitment to growth.

Second Sale (2023)

Over a decade later, the same business came full circle when the owners who were now looking to retire, once again turned to Business Partnership to handle the sale. With a solid track record of profitability and a skilled team in place, the company remained an attractive acquisition target.

Despite changes in the market, the business maintained its highly efficient manufacturing processes, its strong industry relationships, and its reputation for quality and reliability. These factors ensured a smooth and successful sale to a new owner, securing the company’s future while allowing the seller to exit on the best possible terms.

Key Success Factors

  • Strong connections with commercial vehicle dealers, contract hire firms, and leasing companies made the business an essential supplier.

  • CNC technology and optimisation software maximised production efficiency and material usage.

  • Servicing both corporate clients and small businesses provided revenue stability.

  •  A dedicated team with extensive experience ensured operational continuity post sale.

  • A profitable, scalable operation made the company an appealing prospect for acquisition.

Conclusion

This company highlights Business Partnership’s expertise in successfully navigating the transition of a business from owner to owner.  The ability to identify the right buyers, manage the sale process smoothly, and ensure strong business continuity demonstrates our understanding of SME sales and succession planning.

For business owners considering their own exit strategy, this story serves as a reminder that timing, preparation, and expert guidance can lead to a seamless and rewarding sale process—whether it’s the first time or the second!

(Both sales were originally managed by John Hatt, Business Partnership broker who retired in 2024)
